Food is more than just a biological reality, its sensual, spiritual even. Our first contact with food is through a woman’s breast and from that moment on we form relationships with it for better or worse. Some of us grew up eating around a dinner table others around a television set. We pray over our food or have religious dietary restrictions—showing that even the gods care about this experience. Purpose, reward, community, sex, story-telling, art, meaning and symbolism, the sacred and profane, all of these things have been a part of the story of food, Mastica is about continuing this deeper story and rescuing food from the clutches of mediocrity.
